The Adderall Dilemma

The Adderall Dilemma

1. a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more alternatives, especially equally undesirable ones.

It makes me crave cigarettes, and I hate smoking.

I don’t like taking pills every day.

I don’t like the stigma attached to taking Adderall or ADD medications in general.

I’m less forgetful.

I’m more organized.

I’m on time.

I write things down.

I stay on task at work.

I feel better about myself.

I have less anxiety when I take my medicine.

I’m nicer to other humans.

The brain cloud is lifted.

It works for me. It works better than anything else we’ve tried.

My doctor wants me to go back on it.

My husband wishes I would take it again.

I have no experience with it for adults. My 6 year old took it and she was much better at school as far as behavior and impulsiveness, but she was a zombie with no personality, no interests, no humor and she stopped eating. She actually said to me a week or 2 after stopping it that she ‘missed this’ and I said missed what and she said ‘this! eating food.’ 🙁

Can you try a different med or dosage?

This was what we landed on after playing with meds and dosages. It works for me, I just don’t like the cravings to smoke. I also wish I didn’t have to take meds. It’s like a mental block I have.

My son is on Straterra now. He seems to be doing really well on it! He also did bad on Adderall.

Ugh, yeah a craving to smoke would not be good. I’m the same way with meds but I try to figure it in the same category as like taking showers or eating fruit, something we just gotta do.

I’ve got Straterra on my list for future. She did the adderall on lowest dose, no eating, sleeping too much, better behavior but a zombie…the 1st week was aggression then it settled. Now she’s on guanfacine or tenex but school was on break right after she started, so not sure how it will help yet. At home we are fine…very few issues…it’s just school.

That Pro list looks way longer than the Con list.

My son is on Concerta and doing well. He does ok on straterra… but he misses eating food and has problems getting to sleep. I wish there was a happier balance…

I’m very much like you off and on Adderall. I started taking it when I went back to college and discovered that WOW! I do still have a memory! And I can focus and complete tasks!! But on break, I try to stay off it because…you know, addiction. But interestingly, when I’m on it, my sleep cycle is “normal” and when off it, insomnia plagues me. And when I’m off, I generally put on about 15 pounds without actually doing anything different!! Argh. So…yeah. I’m all for taking it.

My son took Adderall for several years. It did wonders for him but much like Kristy’s experience he had no personality, no sense of humor. He was just a boring human. Since it’s a stimulant…is there something else you can substitute like caffeine? Or maybe not a full dose but something less?

I’m with you about hating having to take a pill everyday. What helped me get over it is to think that I am lucky that I have an issue and live in an era where the only thing I have to do to feel better and be normal is take a pill every day.
    Good luck to you.
